Essey

It was my talk with Agata Passent, the polish serial writer that inspired me to reflection on fashion. We have been discussing the problems of nowadays polish fashion press and about how hard is to be a journalist if one wants to write whatever wants, feels. Even if the topic itself is completely unpopular. Indeed, I am a blogger but decided to break the schema and wrote about a gap in front teethes. This gap is an anatomical defect and widely regarded as disfiguring. It can be fixed orthodontic still many want to keep it. Some even find it as a nice distinction. For example well known singer and actress Vanessa Paradis, who you could recently watch in a Heartbreaker movie. Vanessa with her defect look very feminine and coquettishly. In my eyes photo sessions in which she participated are so adorable that I feel really bad not having such a distinguish attribute. The three famous models making big world career can be given as next exampales. Georgia May, Lara Stone and Ashley Smith. Anna Paquin is also worth mentioned. This ones defect definitely helped in getting main role in dark, vampire series True Blood. She fits like a glove! We can not forgot about someone closer to our polish hearts, Tomasz Karolak. The actor openly speaks that his defect is his advantage, he identify himself with it and he won't fix it, for sure!

After meeting my writing aspirations comes time for Ana Finel Honigmans fashion lesson. This time we move about anorexia among models. I find it for the worst that you can notice anorexia ever with big bug eye, instead of cancer, and yet more can be found on the runways or in photo sessions. Whether people who allow it do not feel obliged to help them? Whether the photographer who take part in session shoal not undertake such a work? Indicating that his opposition? We can always blame all the other people around, but still maybe people working for fashion industry have such distorted view of reality that they do not see the problem any more. Or maybe the one to blame are those at the end of the chain. The readers who bought the magazine or saw the photos. My answer is all a little!

Recently there is one the most popular topic, the plus-size models. They may be bigger then those who we known from the runways, yet they are much slimmer then the regular man. Definitely, you can still include them as skinny. In this crazy world it is important to not fall into the paranoia. Promotion of obesity does not have sense either, this disease, just like anorexia, can cause real health problems. I would like to note that I have been running some photo sessions and I know this from my experience that things look bet on skinny models. Furthermore, the camera likes to cheat you, it never shows the reality as it really is. This is why photographer must improve the model so much to show her beauty. Moving about the models, you may want to ask who they really are? What belongs to their duty? To present them self or the cloths? The answer is as simple as it is, the cloths. So whether they should be distorted depending on the figures of models? Not necessarily, this is why models are so skinny to not distort the reception what is essential for the spectator.

After the series of people who can watch somebody suffers, here comes the time to those who fight with it. Everyone in his unique way. You can find plenty of photo sessions referring to models addictions. They are presented as ill, desperate shopaholics or with drug problems. Being drug addicted is one of the most popular issue of young girls who tries to succeed on the runways but the showbiz pushes them so many they have not time to rest. They must find their way to give vent to emotions. The trouble I sees in the whole situations is that press shows them, unlike the anorexia girls, as the bad ones, taking the drugs. They judge and ridicule more and more incriminating photos. Magazines showing this issue have created some kind of cult, chasing or supporting? Hard to say. There is at least one good sample of this dual judge cult, Kate Moss. She lost everything one of journals published her photos take cocaine and then, nobody can say when, they hail her the top model. She still is, despite she never changed her lifestyle. She still works with the best.

During our lectures we also talked about the homeless people, who does not exist for fashion world. Poverty and illness are the two taboo subjects and both of them are directly related to homelessness. You can assume that there is two time smaller probability to show them in the press. Despite the taboo there are those how did not scare to show them. John Galliano created the collection for Dior inspired by homeless outlook. There we plenty of newspapers which seems to look like they where put on the person to heat it up. I found the collection quite interesting but must admit that you always must think how far can you go with your inspiration to avoid offending anyone. Not to be exposed to ostracism. I am a person with unpopular views. I consider artists and their souls incomprehensible for normal people, Diors collection may hurt someone feelings but yet there are ones who find it inspiring as another. It is worth being inspiring by the world which surrounds us even if it is ugly and sick. The other example of connecting fashion with homelessness is the show of famous, yet controversial designer Patrick Mohr. He invites homeless people met in the streets of Berlin to take part in his exhibition as models. Just a pity that their appearance contrasted with other models, so it exposed they difference not showing the real social issue.

Conclude that, we have two types of people. The first are trying to do a lot of noise around them and move controversial subjects, so the magazines wrote about them. Even contrast them with what is commonly accepted, like the designer mentioned above. The rest are drawing inspiration from things considered taboo. They are showing the issue, publicize them and draw conclusions. In my opinion the fundamental rule of every magazine should be to be truly honest with readers. You read the newspaper because you identify yourself with it. No one likes to be cheated by those who teaches us! It is worth showing the world how the photo session and fashion community looks like for inside, to question the readers the simple things about which they often forget. Just to show them what is a real problem.
